On Sunday, Nov. 1st, the Chiefs suffered a 28-24 defeat to the Denver Broncos, yet Travis Kelce refuses to offer excuses. The veteran tight end owns the procedural errors that cost his team the game and the lead in the AFC West.

He told reporters in the locker room that the mistakes start with him looking in the mirror. This honesty is the only path forward for a team that blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead.

The Cost of Small Mistakes

The Kansas City Chiefs fell to 5-2 after this crushing defeat, dropping them out of first place in their division. Denver scored 15 unanswered points in the final quarter to steal the win. Kelce secured five receptions for 67 yards but felt his own performance did not set the right tone.

He noted that the team has been struggling with procedural stuff since the bye week. “The little things, the mistakes, and it starts with the person that you’re looking at in the mirror,” continued Kelce. Those small errors add up fast when you are playing for a championship.

Kelce did not hold back on his frustration during the post-game interview. He pointed out that he has been in the league for a long time and should know better by now. “I’ve been frustrated with myself on how long I’ve been in the league and the procedural stuff that’s happened for the past three games really,” he said.

The team was penalized 11 times for 105 yards, a stat that hurts any offense trying to win. Kelce added, “You just can’t f—ing do it. Excuse my language,” while describing the repeated errors.

A Division That Changed Hands

Denver took the top spot in the AFC West after this game, leaving the Chiefs to play catch-up. Sky Sports NFL analyst Jeff Reinebold warned that this loss will have long-term effects on the team’s mindset.

“It will be one that is gonna haunt them for a long time because this was a game where they could have taken control of the division,” said Reinebold. The Chiefs had a chance to win it all on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line but failed due to a false start penalty. That penalty negated a potential game-winning touchdown pass to Rashee Rice.

A 54-yard field goal attempt by Harrison Butker late in the game failed, which might have otherwise maintained the Chiefs’ lead. This miss set up the Broncos for their final scoring drive. With 1:56 remaining, Jonah Coleman scored a five-yard touchdown that secured the victory for Denver.

The Broncos finished with a 6-2 record, while the Chiefs now face a tough road ahead. Kelce knows the team needs to step up immediately. “We got a lot of fight,” he said, trying to find a positive in a bad loss. “I think we showed some fight, a lot of fight, and I can take that out of this.”

The Chiefs must fix their fundamentals before they play the New York Jets on Sunday, Nov. 8. They cannot afford another loss if they want to reclaim the division title. Kelce emphasized that he must be better for his teammates to set the right tone.

“I gotta be better for my teammates and that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room,” he explained. The team needs everyone to up the ante and stop making the same errors. Bo Nix proved he can win close games, so the Chiefs need to play with more focus. The margin for error is gone.
