The Atlanta Braves signed former New York Mets infielder Vidal Bruján to a minor league contract on Saturday. This move adds a switch-hitting player with elite speed to the Braves’ camp. Bruján, who played nine games for the Mets last season, will now compete for a spot on the Atlanta roster. The deal gives the Mets a specific player to watch as they look for their own depth options this winter.

Last year, he played nine games in the majors for the Mets and 65 at Triple-A. His return to the Braves creates a direct link between the two teams. The Braves need help at shortstop, and Bruján offers experience at that position along with second base and the outfield.

A Direct Link Between Rivals

The Braves and Mets are division foes, so any player swap gets attention. Bruján played for the Mets in 2026, where he went 1 for 11 with a walk and an RBI. That small sample size shows he struggled to make an impact in New York. Now he heads back to a team that knows his skills well. In August 2025, the Braves claimed him off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

During his time with Atlanta in late 2025, Bruján played 24 games. He hit .268 with a .362 on-base percentage and a .317 slugging percentage in 41 at-bats. These numbers show he can handle big league pitching when he gets the chance. The team sees value in bringing him back to a familiar environment. It is a low-risk move for Atlanta to test his speed and defense again.

Shortstop Needs and Roster Depth

The Braves face a big question at shortstop this offseason. Both Mauricio Dubón and Ha-Seong Kim are free agents, leaving the position thin. “The Braves have the most glaring shortstop need in MLB,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote. This gap makes every new signing important. The team also has Jim Jarvis as an in-house option, but they need more help.

Experience in the big leagues at second base, shortstop, third base, and all three outfield spots is what Bruján brings. DJourn of Battery Power observed that this move provides the organization with depth across multiple positions. This versatility is key for a bench player. If Dubón does not return on a two-year deal, Bruján could take a larger role. He will enter Spring Training fighting for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Since making his 2021 debut, Bruján has appeared in 271 games at the MLB level.
  • He has recorded 5 Defensive Runs Saved at shortstop in his career.
  • Only 32 shortstops have more defensive runs saved at the position.

For Mets fans, losing a utility man like Bruján is a small loss but worth noting. The Mets used him as a depth piece last year. He was a switch-hitter who could play multiple spots, which is exactly what teams want in a bench player. Now he returns to a rival that already trusts his defensive work. The Mets will need to find someone else to fill that same role if they lose more depth.

The Braves’ group at shortstop in 2026 combined for -0.4 bWAR, which ranked 23rd in MLB. Bruján does not make the position a strength overnight, but he raises the floor. He can be a useful depth piece while Dubón, Mateo, and Kim head into free agency. The Mets must look at their own roster to see if they have a similar player available or if they need to sign someone new.

Other Moves in the Offseason

The Braves are busy with other major decisions this winter. They exercised options for Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies for the 2027 season. “The Braves today exercised options for OF Ronald Acuña Jr. and INF Ozzie Albies for the 2027 season,” the Braves posted. This secures their core stars but leaves the infield depth open for new additions like Bruján.
