Max Verstappen has issued a stark warning to Red Bull about their launch problems in Singapore. The four-time world champion says a poor start on Saturday effectively ends their hopes for Sunday. He admitted the team needs to fix how the car accelerates from a standstill immediately. Without a better launch, the race is effectively over before the first lap begins.
Verstappen secured pole position and won the sprint race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Yet he feels no real emotion about these wins because they do not count as a grand prix victory. “I want to win tomorrow,” he said, showing where his focus truly lies. He also noted, according to Motorsport.com, “I don’t see this as a win in terms of actually winning a grand prix.” The sprint results show the car is fast, but the start remains a fatal flaw.
The Start Problem Is Real
Red Bull has struggled with launches for some time now. In Malaysia, both Mercedes cars surged past Verstappen at the start line. The same issue happened again on Saturday when George Russell overtook him in Singapore. “The start was horrendous again, so that’s definitely something that we need to improve on,” admitted Verstappen. He explained that the car simply does not accelerate off the line like it should. This is a known weakness that other teams like Racing Bulls sometimes exploit.
Verstappen knows the stakes are too high to ignore this issue. Singapore is a street circuit where overtaking is nearly impossible. If a driver loses positions at the start, they are stuck behind slower cars for the entire race. “If you have something like that tomorrow, that’s your race over, if nothing crazy happens,” he stated. This means Red Bull cannot rely on pace alone to win the main event on Sunday.
What Red Bull Must Fix
The team has identified specific limitations they must address before the race. Verstappen pointed out that Racing Bulls occasionally launches better than they do, so they must improve their performance. He said, “We have a few limitations that we have to work on, and that is probably from our side as well.” The engineers need to find a solution quickly or they will lose another race they could have won.
While the RB22 car shows it is competitive in a straight line, the launch remains the weak link. The driver feels the same emotion regardless of past wins or losses on this track. “My emotion is the same,” he added. “It doesn’t matter to me if I have won on the track before or not.” His only goal is winning the grand prix on Sunday, not the sprint.
Can They Turn It Around
Red Bull faces a tight window to solve this before the lights go out on Sunday. The team knows that a bad start will cost them the victory regardless of how fast the car is later. They must hope for no crazy incidents on track to stay in contention. The pressure is now on the engineers to deliver a fix for the launch procedure. If they fail, Verstappen’s warning will prove true before the first corner.
