The NASCAR Cup Series is about to get a lot more stuck. A lawsuit between Joe Gibbs Racing and Spire Motorsports over stolen trade secrets might make it impossible for crew members to switch teams. If this goes through, the talent pool for the whole sport gets smaller.
The legal fight over trade secrets
An active lawsuit by Joe Gibbs Racing targets Spire Motorsports. The issue started when Spire hired Chris Gabehart, who used to be a crew chief and competition director for JGR. According to Racing News, JGR claims Gabehart took info and used it on Spire car setups. Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson says the team does not have proof that any theft happened. He also said they have very little reason to settle the case.
This isn’t just about one hire. It is about how people move in the garage. Jeff Dickerson told Door Bumper Clear that this case could limit mobility between teams. He mentioned that some things, like real aero details, are worth a conversation. He does not think basic skills, like sealing an air box, are secrets. He stated that sealing an air box is not a trade secret.
Chaos in the garage
The drama is getting messy for everyone involved. Denny Hamlin even weighed in on the Spire situation. He said, “There’s no adults in the room, clearly. In that building, no adults.” It sounds like a mess that nobody wants to deal with. Even Spire’s own drivers are feeling the heat. Carson Hocevar recently called himself a JGR driver at the Bristol race.
Spire is trying to fight back against the injunction too. They claim “JGR does not own tire pressures” per RacingNews.co. They also say they were actually winning races right before this legal trouble started. It is hard to win when you are stuck in court. A jury trial for this case is already set for February 1, 2027.
