LIV Golf players shared divided reactions following a 50-minute meeting with CEO Scott O’Neil and a proposed new investor. While some players felt more clarity, others remained noncommittal about the league’s future as financial pressures continue to mount.
Mixed signals from the clubhouse
The meeting at the Chatham Hills clubhouse on Tuesday brought together every member of the LIV Golf league. The session lasted about 50 minutes. According to ESPN, players left the room with different views on the league’s direction.
Brendan Steele, a member of HyFlyers, noted that the atmosphere felt positive. “I think there’s a lot of excitement in the room,” Steele said. He also mentioned that the most important goal is making sure players feel comfortable with how the league moves forward.
However, not every player shared this enthusiasm. Some players chose not to speak to the media at all. Bryson DeChambeau was seen talking animatedly on his phone but did not stop for interviews. Other players were careful with their words, refusing to share specific details about the investor’s plans or the future of the league.
Financial uncertainty hangs over the league
The meeting comes at a difficult time for LIV Golf. The league is currently facing several significant hurdles:
- A team championship event scheduled for next week was cancelled.
- The league is managing multiple lawsuits regarding unpaid invoices.
- Financial downsizing has already reduced prize purses and scheduled concert events.
- The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia withdrew its funding in April.
The league is trying to find new funding to keep going past this season. A lead investor and LIV Golf agreed to a term sheet, O’Neil announced two weeks ago. The identity of this investor and the specific terms of the deal remain unknown. It is also unclear if stars like Jon Rahm or Bryson DeChambeau will support the new plan.
Money issues are also hitting the players directly. The Sports Business Journal reported that some golfers are still waiting to be paid for the event at Trump Bedminster that ended on August 9.
Players remain cautious about the future
The gap between the players’ reactions shows how much is at stake. While Steele expressed commitment to the league, others are waiting to see what happens next. Former Masters champion Sergio GarcÃa was asked about his future and simply replied, “We’ll see.” He noted that many things are being discussed and the group is working through the situation.
Martin Kaymer, the captain of Cleeks GC, also noted that there is still much to figure out. “The investor is excited, but obviously there’s a few things that need to be figured out,” Kaymer said. He stated that it is too early to predict what next year will look like, but noted that the group is working hard for more specifics.
The league is now attempting to build a new path without the Saudi Arabian funding.
