Kyle Larson sits on the brink of a historic third NASCAR Cup Series title with a commanding 67-point lead. Per Yahoo Sports, the Hendrick Motorsports driver only needs to score nine points at the Homestead-Miami Speedway finale to officially secure the championship. This margin is so large that he does not even need to win the race or lead any laps to take the trophy home.
The virtual world is preparing to mirror this real-world drama with the iRacing Homestead Championship Special Event. This week’s sim race covers 400 miles, or 267 laps, on the same track where real drivers will fight for the crown. According to iRacing, the event features dynamic weather and both fixed and open setup options to test driver skill.
The Math Makes It Hard For Challengers
Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin face a nearly impossible task to catch Larson before the checkered flag falls. Bell sits in second place but trails by 67 points, while Hamlin is 70 points behind the leader. Per Yahoo Sports, even if Bell scores the maximum 76 points available in the race, Larson would still win the title by reaching that nine-point threshold.
This means Larson can finish 28th or better without earning a single stage point and still lock up the championship. The pressure is entirely on his rivals to hope for a mechanical failure or a crash for the No. 5 Chevrolet. Bell finished 10th at Martinsville and Hamlin came in sixth, but neither could close the gap enough to change the odds.
William Byron won the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville to jump to ninth in the standings, but he is not in the championship hunt. A pit strategy error that put Larson a lap down early in the race did not stop him from recovering. His ability to get back on the lead lap and finish ninth while holding the points lead shows why he is the favorite to win.
Real Life And Virtual Racing Collide
The iRacing event is scheduled for November 8 at 3:00 pm ET to match the timing of the real-world finale. According to iRacing, this is the first time since 2019 that Homestead-Miami Speedway will crown the real-world champions for the Cup, Truck, and Xfinity Series. The virtual race uses the current NASCAR Cup Series cars to ensure an authentic experience for sim racers.
Shawn Conklin has dominated the iRacing Open season with 25 wins in 49 starts. He holds a lead of nearly 1,700 points over second-place Jacob Reid in the virtual standings. The Fixed Series is much tighter, with Maximillion Bianco leading but Nick Olsen within 200 points of the title.
To participate in the special event, drivers must hold a Class C+ or Class D with a 4.0 Safety Rating. The iRacing eSports Network will handle the broadcast call for the top split beginning Friday at 9 pm ET. Fans can watch the action live at iRacing.com/live to see who takes the virtual crown.
One Bad Day Changes Everything
In March 2025, Larson won the latest Cup Series race at Homestead, gaining a huge psychological advantage. The track has a long history of delivering memorable championship battles. One mistake by Larson could hand the title to Bell or Hamlin, but the odds favor the leader.
Both Bell and Hamlin need an enormous performance to make the race interesting. While hoping Larson encounters an unusually difficult afternoon, they must strive to maximize their results. The season concludes on November 8, and everything comes down to one final Sunday at the speedway.
