Three major NBA teams are already lining up to sign Karl-Anthony Towns if he walks away from the New York Knicks. Towns holds a massive $220 million contract with New York right now, yet he could still enter free agency if talks fail. This creates a real risk that a former Rookie of the Year and NBA champion could land in Atlanta or elsewhere.

The situation turned sour quickly when the Knicks decided to stop negotiating with their stars. The organization told the media last Friday that they would not discuss extensions until later in the season. Towns mentioned it was news to him, and told reporters he was “very disappointed.”

The Dispute Over Money and Trust

Karl-Anthony Towns has been the most vocal player about wanting a new deal. He is willing to take a pay cut to stay in New York, but the Knicks offered him far less than he expected. Reports indicate the team offered a four-year, $200 million extension while he could have asked for up to $276 million. The gap between these numbers caused the talks to shut down completely. Towns made his feelings clear after hearing the organization address the media without him.

“It was news to me. Very disappointed to say the least. Let’s state the obvious. It’s business, but there is business on the court for us to handle,” Towns said, according to Yahoo Sports. His frustration shows he wants to play, but he also wants respect from the front office. The Knicks have paused all extension talks with multiple players, including Towns and Josh Hart.

Even if he does not sign a new deal, Towns has a player option for next season worth a significant amount of money. He must decide whether to decline that option to become a free agent. If he chooses to leave, the Knicks could clear a significant amount of cap space. This would allow them to reformat the team around Jalen Brunson before his new deal kicks in.

Why Atlanta Is a Top Target

The Atlanta Hawks are one of the three teams named by Windhorst as a suitor for Towns. Several expiring contracts on the Hawks roster might generate substantial cap space next offseason. Towns could be signed for any amount with this money. Atlanta is building something special with its young core, and adding an established star like Towns would change everything. The team has the flexibility to make a move if Towns becomes available.

Towns has proven his value on the biggest stage. Last year’s regular season saw him average 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds. His recent performance in the preseason against the Toronto Raptors on October 15 also showed his skill. He recorded 13 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists in a 122-120 win. He helped create opportunities for others, proving he is more than just a scorer.

The Warriors and Clippers are also in the mix for his services. With Stephen Curry nearing the end of his career, the Warriors have long sought another star. Following the trade of Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers aim to revamp their roster, and Towns fits well. These teams are studying the Knicks closely, waiting to see if Towns opts out. They know the value of having an NBA champion center on their roster.

The Game That Matters Most

New York has more immediate priorities than contract talks right now. Madison Square Garden will host their October 20 regular-season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers. To celebrate past achievements, the team will hoist its championship banner before the game. For this title defense, Towns stays a key element in the team’s strategy. However, the uncertainty around his contract gives the upcoming season added significance for everyone involved.

Should Towns not receive an extension, he might opt out to join free agency. Windhorst reports that other teams are analyzing this situation with the Knicks.
