The New Threat on the Field
Most people think a team just gets a few new players and keeps playing the same way. FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan says that idea is wrong for Atlanta United. He told reporters that the Black and Gold have added so much skill that they are now a “different team” and a “strong team.” This change happened fast. The club brought in veterans who can win duels, hold up the ball, and finish plays. Noonan noted that the new front line includes Breel Embolo, Alexey Miranchuk, and Miguel Almiron. These three men bring a level of experience that makes the whole squad dangerous from the goalkeeper up.
The schedule makes this shift even more critical. FC Cincinnati returns from the international break to face Atlanta on Saturday night. A demanding period begins for the Orange and Blue as they face two matches per week. They have seven matches to finish before Halloween. Noonan knows the team cannot look too far ahead. “We’re preparing for Atlanta. We don’t have an approach other than we know the schedule as far as the seven games,” he said at his prematch press conference. “We have to put together a good performance against Atlanta and go from there.”
Why Embolo Changes the Game Plan
The biggest surprise is how Breel Embolo plays. He is not just a fast runner. Noonan described him as a “very well-rounded player” who can beat defenders with speed or by winning physical battles. Embolo knows how to turn under pressure and hold the ball while teammates run. He can also disguise his moves to confuse the defense. This makes him a nightmare for any center back. Atlanta also added Júnior Alonso and Paulo DÃaz to the back line. These are experienced international players who bring a new kind of toughness.
The midfield has seen major changes too. The club brought in Mauricio Amaro and Giuliano Galoppo to support the attack. Noonan pointed out that these are players his team has not seen in action yet. When talented players like this start working together, the result is a unit that is harder to stop. The coach admitted that this new mix of pieces makes the opponent a “good challenge.” The health of his own group is good, which gives him options. But he knows the opponent’s new pieces are the real story right now.
Young Stars Shine in the Next Pro League
While the first team gets ready for a tough night, the young players at Atlanta United 2 are making history. Three players from the second team were named to the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro Best XI. Dominik Chong Qui, Cameron Dunbar, and Arif Kovac earned these spots. Chong Qui is a Homegrown player who set career highs with 26 starts, three goals, and three assists. This season, he also notched 11 clearances along with 31 key passes.
Cameron Dunbar led the league in assists with 13. He tied the all-time single-season record for assists and won the 2026 Playmaker of the Year Award. Dunbar also scored nine goals and had 22 total goal contributions. Arif Kovac led the league with 20 goals. This total is the joint-second-highest in league history. He won the 2026 Golden Boot and scored five goals in a single game against Huntsville City FC on May 16. These numbers show that the club is building deep talent.
The Road to Decision Day
The path to the playoffs is getting crowded. On Oct. 16 at 6 p.m., Atlanta United 2 will welcome CT United FC to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground for their inaugural playoff clash. All playoff games and the MLS NEXT Pro Cup in November will air live on OneFootball and MLSNEXTPro.com.
For FC Cincinnati, the focus remains on the immediate task. They must win to stay in the hunt. The schedule is tight, and the opponent is strong. Noonan’s message was clear: one game at a time. “I think the good part is the health for the most part of the group is giving us good (availability),” he said. “And we’re going to need (that) through this stretch.” The team has the players to do it. Now they have to prove it against a new-look Atlanta United side.
