Cooper Rush is not the future for the Atlanta Falcons, and he is barely a safe bet for the present. The team announced he is “still getting treatment on his back” while preparing for a crucial Sunday game, according to RotoBaller NFL. This is a placeholder situation, not a starting lineup. Fantasy owners who draft him as a starter are making a mistake based on thin hope and bad timing.

Kevin Stefanski, the head coach, said Rush will practice on Wednesday despite the injury. The coach also noted he is not ruling anyone out yet. This vague stance leaves fans guessing. The reality is that Michael Penix Jr. is recovering from a torn ACL and Tua Tagovailoa has an oblique injury. With both other options hurt, Rush becomes the only man standing, even if his back spasms are real.

The Numbers Do Not Look Good

Rush threw for 143 yards in the season opener. He added one touchdown and two interceptions. That stat line cost the Falcons a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team lost 20-13 in a game where Rush was decent but not great. Now he faces the Carolina Panthers, a division rival that knows his weaknesses. If he starts again, he is merely a desperation QB2 option in superflex formats.

The Athletic’s Josh Kendall reported that the team changed their media advisory. The old note said “starting QB press conference.” The new note reads: “QB Cooper Rush press conference.” This small change tells the whole story. The Falcons listed Rush “based on no new information” about the other quarterbacks. They are just filling a slot on the schedule.

Why The Decision Is Delayed

Stefanski will announce the starter “whenever he decides to make his decision public.” That quote comes straight from the NFL Network’s Steve Wyche. It sounds like the coach is buying time. He knows Penix is not ready for game action. He knows Tagovailoa might miss a second straight game. Rush is the bridge, and bridges are not meant to carry heavy traffic forever.

Fantasy managers need to watch the waiver wire closely. If Rush starts, the offensive weapons around him will likely struggle. The 32-year-old quarterback does not have the arm strength to carry a deep passing game. His stats from last week prove he is a game manager, not a playmaker. Downgrading all the team’s offensive weapons is the smart play.

The Falcons are in a tough spot. They have a starting quarterback with a back injury and two backups who are hurt.
