A Glimpse of What Could Be

Bill Belichick’s North Carolina team earned a moral victory against Notre Dame by showing all three phases can compete. The defense made a goal line stand, the offense moved the ball for a score, and special teams returned a kickoff for another. This mix gave fans a clear look at what UNC football could become under Belichick. It proved the team can play toe to toe with an elite opponent, even if the final score did not reflect that potential.

The offense put up numbers against the Irish that no one else could match. They gained 285 total yards and averaged 5.6 yards per play. If the defense had stopped Notre Dame in the second half, the result might have been very different. This game showed the talent is there to win big games, but it also highlighted the cracks that need fixing before the season ends.

The Second Half Problem

That win feels like a moral victory because the team fell apart after the break. Notre Dame went on a tear right after UNC returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Irish scored 16 points while holding UNC to just 14 yards in that span. They burned more than 19 minutes off the clock to stretch the lead to 37-20. The defense simply could not stop the bleeding when it mattered most.

This is not the first time UNC has struggled after halftime. Against Clemson, the defense got gashed on the ground and through the air. Opponents are making better adjustments at the break. The numbers show a clear drop in performance. Against top competition after the half, the offense has only scored 12 points in three games. They rank 88th nationally in third down conversion, which means they rarely get into the red zone.

Belichick faces two huge conference games coming up at Pitt and Duke. Both teams are undefeated. These matches will define his second season at UNC. If the team cannot fix the second-half issues, the early promise against Notre Dame will mean very little in the standings.

Notre Dame Moves Forward Despite Scars

While UNC looks to fix its issues, Notre Dame is moving forward with a team that has won 15 consecutive games over the last 12 and a half months. They are 5-0 this year and have won every game by double digits. Their biggest test is coming on October 17 against No. 8 Brigham Young. Getting healthy is key for their run.

Notre Dame offensive lineman Anthonie Knapp played through a bloody face during the win over UNC. Coach Marcus Freeman had a unique reaction to the injury. He said, “We talk about bloody Tuesdays around here, that was a bloody Saturday,” Freeman said, referring to Notre Dame’s practice mentality, according to Yahoo Sports. He told his player to keep the blood to himself so it would not distract others.

Freeman confirmed that Knapp will play against Stanford this weekend. “He’s a tough dude, man,” Freeman said. “I saw a picture of him, and it was like blood everywhere. But that’s Knapp for you, man.” The team is not worried about his status, but they do have other injury concerns. Leonard Moore, the cornerback, is questionable due to being in the concussion protocol.

If Moore cannot go, Jayden Sanders and DJ McKinney will step in. Freeman said, “Right now, if Leonard wouldn’t be able to go, it would be Jayden Sanders and DJ McKinney at cornerback.” He added that Mark Zackery IV, Ayden Pouncey, and Khary Adams would be ready if needed. Linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is also questionable with a thumb injury.

Offensive lineman Matty Augustine is working his way back from a foot injury. Freeman said, “He did some football specific work last week with our strength staff and medical staff and this week, he’ll get into practice.” Augustine will not do every rep, but he will start doing football specific work. The coaches will see how he looks on Tuesday and Wednesday to decide his availability for Saturday.

What the Numbers Say for Stanford

The next game for Notre Dame is against Stanford on Saturday, October 10. The Irish are heavy favorites, with oddsmakers projecting a spread of -37.5. In their three losses this season, Stanford suffered defeats by margins of 39, 28, and 54 points. They lost 57-3 to Wake Forest, which is a bad sign for their defense.

The Irish defense restricted UNC to 77 rushing yards while holding them to 3.3 yards per carry. They also won the turnover battle 2-0. The Irish offense is cooking and could post a season-high in yards. They finished with 475 total yards against UNC. Quarterback CJ Carr tied his career high with four touchdown passes and added a rush score for five total scores. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 234 yards.

Stanford has managed only 197 yards in their losses, with 148 coming through the air. Nothing was working for them as they went down 29-3 in the first half against Wake Forest. That game saw the Cardinals give up 14 or more points during each of the four quarters. If the Irish offense remains unstoppable, Stanford faces a long day ahead.

Belichick’s team needs to learn from the Notre Dame game. They showed they can compete, but they need to finish strong. The second half against the Irish was a mess. If they want to win the ACC, they must fix those issues before facing Pitt and Duke. The talent is there, but the execution must improve.

For Notre Dame, the focus is on health and dominance. They have a deep bench and tough players like Knapp. They are ready to play Stanford even if they have to plug in backups at cornerback. The goal is to keep rolling and get ready for the big game against BYU.
