Coach JJ Redick explained that the young players need actual game time to develop. This move ends his bench time in a season in which the team has started strong.
Redick told the players directly, “You guys need reps, and you need to play,” per the New York Post. The coaching staff recognizes that Carr and James have not received enough minutes in the NBA to grow. Carr has played only one minute total across three games since his debut. James has logged just 2.4 minutes in five appearances this season.
Why The G League Assignment Makes Sense
Keeping young players on the roster without letting them play hurts their long-term value. The Lakers have won early games, which limits opportunities for backups. Sending Carr and James to Coachella Valley gives them a chance to run the offense and make decisions in real time. The team expects both guards to return for the upcoming three-game road trip to Detroit, Atlanta, and Milwaukee. This timeline ensures they get the reps now but still contribute to the main squad soon.
Bronny James signed a fully guaranteed contract for $2.3 million in the offseason. Despite the financial commitment, the team prioritizes his development over keeping him as a spare part. Although Carr, the No. 24 overall draft pick, began the season with an oblique injury, he debuted last Sunday against the Raptors. His limited playing time since then confirms the need for a different environment.
Redick’s Direct Message to the Roster
He emphasized that playing time is the only way for these guards to get better. The New York Post reported that Redick shared this specific messaging with Carr and James before the assignment.
By sending the players to the G League, the organization admits that the current NBA rotation does not fit their growth needs.
Carr and James play for Coachella Valley until the Lakers finish their home stand. Both players are scheduled to rejoin the main squad for that trip. The window for their G League stint is short, keeping the focus on immediate development.
If Carr and James cannot get minutes in the G League, they will not get them in the NBA.
