Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Formula 1 world championship while crying so hard he lost nearly two seconds on his final lap. He finished third in Mexico City on Monday, securing the title with only two points needed even if his rivals won the remaining races.
The emotional weight of the moment nearly cost him the race. Antonelli admitted he was struggling to see the track through his own tears. He told reporters, according to RaceFans, “I lost probably two seconds because I was already crying, basically.” Despite the handicap, he managed to snatch third place from Charles Leclerc and hold off his rivals to seal the deal.
The Tears That Cost Time
Most drivers fight to keep their eyes dry and their hands steady. Antonelli did the opposite. He was so overwhelmed that he could barely make out the cars ahead. “I couldn’t see clearly ahead,” he said. “I could see two Ferraris, somehow, with the tears. So it was very special.” He lost 1.8 seconds to the leaders on that final run, a massive gap in a sport where fractions of a second decide victories.
His father, Marco, has long argued that Ferrari missed a huge chance to sign his son. The front page read, “Kimi Antonelli is a Formula 1 world champion,” followed by the sharp remark, according to RaceFans, “Thanks to his talent, the car and the fact that he isn’t racing for Ferrari.” Ferrari has not won a driver’s title since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
A Flawless Path to Glory
Antonelli did not get lucky; he executed a perfect plan. With a 102-point lead at the Circuit of The Americas, he required only one additional victory plus specific results from his rivals. He delivered a “miracle lap” in qualifying, according to reports. Everything from his launch to his tire management was close to flawless. His nearest rivals wound up just one position higher than required, delaying the title by one week.
The pressure was high, but his focus remained sharp. Before taking the fourth grid slot in Mexico, he felt “more tense than usual” He made a careful start, letting Max Verstappen take the lead into turn one. However, he took a big risk after a red flag period. “Then with the red flag, it kind of all went back to zero,” Antonelli explained. “In that moment I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to take more risks.'” That move on Leclerc was crucial to get him on the podium.
A New Era for Mercedes
Since 2014, this win represents the eighth drivers’ championship success for a Mercedes driver. Antonelli joined their young driver program at the age of 11, and now he stands as the youngest ever champion. He plans to keep his racing number for the 2027 season. “I’ll stay with number 12,” he said, choosing not to switch to the traditional number one plate.
The journey from karting to the top of the podium took only five years. “A lot of memories went through my mind in that moment,” he said. “All the memories since karting all the way to here.” He let it all out when he crossed the line because he had achieved one of his biggest dreams. Now he has a few races left to go and plans to enjoy the rest of the season on a high note.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur admitted the pressure of their own one-two finish cost them. “When you’re one-two you don’t imagine you will lose, and we did,” Vasseur said. The result leaves Antonelli as the new king of the track, having turned tears into a title in the most dramatic fashion possible.
