Chase Briscoe took the checkered flag at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 11, by holding off Christopher Bell in a thrilling finish. The win came by just 0.029 seconds after the two drivers made contact on the final lap. This race marked the first time since 2017 that the Cup Series ran a playoff event on the oval track instead of the Roval road course. Fans got what they asked for as the 267-lap Bank of America 400 delivered pure drama.

Weather forced organizers to scrap qualifying, so the starting grid was set by the points system. Kyle Larson started on pole as the points leader, while Briscoe lined up right beside him after his recent win in Las Vegas. The race saw plenty of action, including a three-wide battle for the lead that let Bell take the top spot early on. But Briscoe managed his car better when it counted most.

The Tire That Should Have Lost Him

Most drivers would have crashed or slowed down when their tires failed this badly, but Briscoe did not. In the final laps, Bell was cutting into the lead while Briscoe was managing a serious tire issue. The gap shrank to 1.3 seconds with three laps left, and Bell was closing fast. Briscoe admitted the damage on his radio when he said, “My right front was absolutely smoked.”

That right front tire was a ticking bomb, yet he kept the car straight. He did not panic. He did not lift. He drove through the pain and the damage to cross the line first. This is the kind of grit that wins championships, not just races. Talent gets you to the front, but work keeps you there when things go wrong.

Bell’s Missed Shot at Victory

Christopher Bell had the speed to win but lacked the perfect car handling to seal the deal. He told his team, “It was fine first 20 laps, but then I went loose,” after the race. That looseness cost him time in the corners during the critical final run. USA Sports reported that Bell was told to manage his fuel and only cut loose in the final few laps.

The contact on the last lap did not stop Briscoe, but it showed Bell’s desperation. He caught the #19 Toyota but could not pass it cleanly. Briscoe’s lead was down to a hair, but he held the line. Bell’s team radio call about the car going loose proves he knew the problem but could not fix it in time. A missed opportunity for the #20 driver.

Points and Stage Wins Matter

The race also changed the playoff picture significantly. Kyle Larson won the first stage, while Bell took the second stage points. Larson extended his points lead to 49 over Denny Hamlin after the dust settled. Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman, and William Byron all crashed out late in the first stage when Bowman got loose off turn two.

The return to the oval was a welcome change after years of uneventful Roval races from 2018 to 2025. The 1.5-mile track in Concord, North Carolina, proved it can still deliver excitement.
