Kasey Kahne is coming out of retirement to drive the No. 77 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports. The 18-time Cup Series winner will compete full-time during the 2027 FedEx Freight Truck Series season. This move brings a legendary talent back to the pavement after years of dirt racing.

A massive talent boost for Spire Motorsports

Spire Motorsports is making a huge statement by bringing back a driver with 18 Cup Series wins. This isn’t just a random signing. According to reports, Spire confirmed the news on Wednesday. The team is getting a driver who has a massive history in the sport. Jeff Dickerson, the co-owner of Spire Motorsports, is clearly excited about the talent level here. He said, “This is one of the coolest announcements we’ve been able to make.”

The numbers behind Kahne’s skill are hard to ignore. While he has 722 career starts across the top three series, his record in the Truck Series is almost perfect. Per Yahoo Sports, Kahne has won five of his six career Truck Series starts. He even has an incredible average finish of 1.2 in those trucks. You don’t just find that kind of efficiency sitting around. Bringing that level of winning experience to the No. 77 car changes the whole dynamic of the 2027 season.

The end of the health issues era

Many fans thought Kahne was done with NASCAR after his 2018 season ended early. He had to leave the Cup Series because of chronic dehydration issues. Those long, hot races were just too much for his body at the time. Now, the 46-year-old driver is ready for a different challenge. He noted that the shorter races in the Truck Series are a better fit. Kahne told Yahoo Sports that his health was “in a good place because I don’t do this all the time. I don’t do the long races, the heat.”

It is smart to use the Truck Series as a way to transition back. The races are shorter than the grueling Cup events. Kahne even admitted that the idea of returning was a surprise to him. According to Yahoo Sports, he stated that upon Jeff (Dickerson) initially inquiring about driving trucks for Spire Motorsports, he doubted the seriousness of the offer. It turns out, the Spire owner was very serious about bringing a champion back to the track.

Looking toward the 2027 season

The 2027 season will start at Daytona International Speedway on February 19. Kahne is not just looking for a hobby; he is looking to win. His schedule has remained full with dirt car competition in both the World of Outlaws and High Limit Racing. However, the lure of pavement racing is clearly too strong to resist. He said in a press release that he kept up with the sport enough to know that Spire wins races.

Spire is betting big on this veteran. Dickerson said he fully trusts that Kahne has the same drive to win that he has always had. For a team looking to chase a championship, having a driver with 31 national-series victories is a massive advantage.
